Glowing From Glow – Vancouver Acupuncture and Wellness Centre That Is Finally Curing Me

Vancouver Acupuncture – Vancouver Wellness Centre: Glow Wellness Centre Is The Answer To Holistic Healing

I have finally found an acupuncture and wellness centre in Vancouver to heal me! I have had many body ailments and injuries over the past 20 years, mostly rips, tears and fractures from playing all kinds of sports, landing a few snowboarding concussions, but also from being quite accident prone in general – who else tears out their entire shoulder from slipping and tumbling down a snowy, wet escalator in the Montreal Metro?

I have visited somewhere between 5 and 10 different physiotherapists in 4 cities across Canada over the last decade, all of them have helped me tremendously, and all have lent a hand in fixing whatever needed fixing. But I am not quite 100% on most injuries. The trick (for me) with physical injuries to the body: consistency and diligence – you’d think it’d be easy to do those stretches and exercises twice a day to improve your strength. It’s not. If things are mostly working, I think I am good to go. How stubborn.

But I have found a place and a practitioner that has given me the knowledge, motivation and positive mental boost to be diligent. I am receiving treatment for a pretty minor injury at the moment, but it is one that has inhibited me to do very much of anything on my feet for the past 3 months, essentially stopping me from most things I like, running being number one on the list. Arg.

Glow Acupuncture and Wellness Centre is a lovely space to spend some time. Located in downtown Vancouver, in the heart of Yaletown, this peaceful, airy, 4th floor centre is a treat. The floors are covered in beautiful, old hardwood, the windows are large with Vancouver city views, allowing for plenty of light, each treatment room makes you want to run home and redecorate your own bedroom to be just as calming and fresh as these rooms, and the walls are dotted with simplistic, wonderful original artwork and photography that leaves you feeling inspired. Of course there are the token rock and waterfall sculptures for a little added serenity.

And you’re always greeted with a lovely, pleasant, smiling face! My acupuncturist, one of the founders and owners of Glow is excellent: thorough, professional, highly trained, extremely knowledgeable, helpful, sincere, and most of all, compassionate about my pain and passionate about bringing me back to 100%.

Glow offers a wide array of services, from deep tissue massage, to acupuncture, yoga, detoxification, even helping you to quit smoking if need be! I would recommend this wellness centre to anyone in a heartbeat, for anything at all where your body and mind is concerned.

One of my best friends just had a healthy baby girl a few weeks ago, her first child. Getting pregnant was one challenge, but having a healthy, uneventful pregnancy, in labour for a quick 6 hours, and 7 fast minutes of actual pushing, WITH, I may add, a baby that SLEEPS ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, she is truly blessed and attributes all of this good fortune to consistent acupuncture throughout.

Glow is the place to seek out for caring for yourself and your body. Get in touch with them here. Or if you would like to ask me more questions about my experience, comment here or contact me.

VIDBLOG: The Vancouver International Digital Festival Has A Blog!

Check This: VIDBLOG

This year, VIDFEST has been moved from the traditional time slot of mid June, to late September – a strategic move to perhaps free up more summer time for all of those other conferences, and to place the festival leading into the Vancouver International Film Festival, which runs at the end of September and into October.

There are some “in-house” writers contributing regularly on VIDBLOG, but every so often you may see a guest appearance by bloggers, technologists and other industry folks, blogging about anything under the sun. Well, within the realm of technology, the internet, gaming – all things digital media, we’ll say.

VIDFEST is a world premiere event that is organized by New Media BC every year and sponsored and attended by people in the technology sector from around the world.

You can find out what is on the slate for the festival in 2007 on the schedule, and you can also register online (tickets on sale starting in JULY).

DemoCamp Vancouver – May 24th at WorkSpace

The inaugural DemoCamp Vancouver is set to go Thursday evening, May 24th at WorkSpace in Gastown.

What the hell is a demo camp, you ask?

In a nutshell, it’s a rapid fire show and tell. It’s a gathering of professionals, roughly over a 2 hour period, where a whole slew of folks from different industries, sectors, businesses from around the city get together and showcase an idea, thing, project, web app, toy, art, invention, whatever, to the rest of us. It could encompass anything from a project you are working on or launching, to a mere great idea sketched out on a napkin. Those presenting will have the floor for all of 6 mintues to do so, no more, no less (that 6 minutes will be allocated to 3 minutes of presenting, 3 minutes of open floor discussions, then on to the next!)
It’s meant to be organic. It’s meant to be grass roots, analogue, no bells or whistles, and most certainly, anyone and everyone is welcome to attend – it’s FREE!

Check out our Facebook page and join the group in the fine fashion of Facebook style that we all know and love.

SIGN UP HERE ON THE WIKI! (You should go to this page and add your name to the list of participants at the bottom.)

Those of you happily using Upcoming.org, sign up there as well.

We hope to see you there – it should be an eventful evening, and you’ll be making history by being a part of the official, long-awaited, first ever Vancouver DemoCamp. It has grand potential to be inspirational, perhaps somewhat geeky (always in a great way), and most definitely uber cool.

Women In Digital Media: New Media BC at Bell Canada

The PanelLast night I sat on a panel for an event organized by New Media BC, in conjunction with Wired Woman and Bell Canada, and was fortunate enough to have 3 brilliant and successful women in the digital media sector in Vancouver sitting next to me: Emma Payne from At Large Media, Kiana Mohseni from EA and Jennifer Ouano of Elastic Entertainment.

We were brought together to speak to a room of about 30, mostly women, and share our professional experiences, our successes and challenges, the trends we’ve observed and to discuss ways in which the technology sector could become more attractive and less of an intimidating space for women.

All of the attendendees participated and generated some good convo, ideas, and inspiration. It was nice to connect with people who’ve “gone before”, who have experienced a ton to share with those who would like to jump into technology and into being a cool geeky woman in technology!

Find out more about these types of professional events through the New Media BC events page and Wired Woman.

It’s Time To Talk About Vancouver’s Best Fashion Store: Twigg & Hottie

Globe and Mail, Style Section Article on Twigg & HottieI have been a long time supporter and advocate of this little shop on Main Street called Twigg & Hottie, that ain’t so “little” any more. Since day one of its’ inception way back in 2003, I have spent thousands. (Gulp.) And I don’t regret one penny. It is without a doubt one of the most fantastic fashion boutiques this city has to offer, and let me just tell you why:

    1. Homegrown all the way: All of the designs carried in the store are MADE IN CANADA. Support local.
    2. The clothing: OMG. Unbelievable. If you are a relatively average build and size, i.e. you have a real woman’s body, you will find soooooo much to wear in this store. And each piece is exceptional, but you will also find those “staples” for your wardrobe, and more than likely, with a subtle uniqueness to them, which is refreshing. (And dudes out there – there are *some* shirts and jewlery for you too!)
    3. The mandate: Sustainable clothing. So you pay a little more, well, you’re getting articles of clothes that are helping to save our planet, that will last longer, and that feel incredible on the skin. No contest.
    4. The Main – it’s located on one of the coolest city blocks this town’s got goin’ on.
    5. The owners: Three Fabulous Women. (All fashion designers.) Who know fashion. Who know their business. Who boldly support you with their slogan, “Wear what you want”. Who are lovely and warm and helpful and don’t take themselves so seriously AND who have tirelessly worked their butts off over the past 4 years to see this business grow. And it has…

They’ve had some great press recently: featured in the National Post…. COVER of the Style section in the Saturday Globe and Mail – does it get any better? If you’re in Vancouver, you must go to this store, spend some time perusing, have fun trying on things you may not normally pick off a rack (trust the staff when they pick things out for you and give you their honest opinions)… and then go back to the store a few weeks later to see all the new stock from all the fantastic (over 50+) Canadian designers! If you’re not in this city, you can always find them online!

I am not a “shopper” by any means. I kind of loathe the process. But I could spend hours in this store (and have) in one go. At Twigg & Hottie, I actually love the whole shopping and trying clothes on experience. It does help that I happen to enjoy buying things. So, it’s pretty much the only place I shop, and because of it, I think my wardrobe is pretty top drawer. Who says that?

It’s Official: Plantar Fasciitis = No Marathon

Perhaps this is the universe trying to tell me that only a dude in Greece with a “Niki!” message was meant to run this distance.

After 4 months of solid training, feeling pretty good, increasing the kilometers at a steady pace, getting mentally set for game day, I am faced with the most painful foot condition with the most horrendous name. Wiki says:

Plantar Fasciitis: a painful inflammatory condition caused by excessive wear to the plantar fascia of the foot. The pain usually is felt on the underside of the heel, and is often most intense with the first steps of the day…. It is commonly associated with long periods of weight bearing… shoes with little or no arch support…
(I think these few were the culprits. Ugg Boots are Bad!)

Plantar Fasciitis – just the name itself is enough to make one wince.

As I sit here typing, I am rolling and massaging my feet over 2 frozen cans of OJ – a neat trick of cool compression therapy advice from my sister. And with this impossible condition, one is supposed to just “stay off your feet” – huh? How is this possible? So I’ve hired some unemployeed lackeys as my support team to bring me beverages, food and hockey games on the tele. Not a bad time of the year to be off my feet, really.

Last year I ran the Vancouver Marathon 4 weeks after a rather disturbing concussion. I made out okay, just under 4 hours. This year I was hoping to have a go at 42 km with nothing in my way of making a great time. I even had hopes of Boston in my sight. Ack! It’s disappointing not to reach those big goals.

I don’t think I’ll be drinking the orange juice in these cans under my swollen, sore feet. I hate feet.
